I had client who wanted to use a review widget provided by a vacation rental software company Bookerville. So I had to evaluate the vacation rental software widget more closely.

Unfortunately there is a problem with using a software widget for your reviews. Many of the vacation rental software companies offer a review widget in their dashboard and the idea behind this integration is that you can manage as much as possible from the dashboard. Allowing you to collect your reviews and store them in the booking software dashboard. The reviews will show up on your own vacation rental website once you add a code provided by Bookerville and other vacation rental software companies.

The issue is that the content is not actually on your website its stored on Bookerville’s site. This will mean that Google will not know that these reviews are on your website.

What is happening when you use this software widget is that the reviews are actually stored on Bookerville’s website not yours. After you’ve added the code to your rental website the review widget pulls the information from Bookerville and shows it in what’s called an “iframe”. Google’s spiders are like little robots that crawl your website looking for information to scan and put into their database.

Because its in an iframe Google’s spiders will not be able to find this information and Google will not know to lead people to your site/reviews page. Iframes are like road blocks for Google’s search spiders, they can not pass and see the information behind the iframe, which is where your reviews are being stored.

The thing with reviews is that they often have content rich keywords. There are all sorts of keywords that travelers might include in their review of your vacation rental, especially when they talk about the attractions and use the words, rental, villa property, reviews and different locations/things to do. By using a review widget that is provided by many of the vacation rental software companies you lose any SEO benefits your reviews would’ve given you.
